Warm-Ups, Speaking Activities
A1 A2 Winter & Holidays

Get your young learners excited about the winter holidays with these fun and engaging picture stories! Each story includes emojis that represent winter- and Christmas-themed vocabulary. Students read the story, interpret the emojis, and replace them with the correct words, helping them revise and strengthen their seasonal vocabulary in a playful way.

How to Use

  1. Introduce the activity:
Explain that each story contains emojis standing in for winter or Christmas words. Students must figure out what each emoji means.

  2. Read the story:
Have students read each picture story individually or together as a class.

  3. Replace emojis with words:
Students write or say the correct word that each emoji represents (e.g., 🎄 = Christmas tree, ⛄ = snowman).

  4. Pair or group check:
Let students compare their answers with a partner or small group, discussing any differences.

  5. Class feedback:
Go through the story together and confirm the correct vocabulary, reinforcing pronunciation and meaning.

  6. Optional speaking extension:
Ask students to create their own mini winter story with emojis for classmates to decode.

This activity is perfect for A1–A2 learners to revise winter and Christmas vocabulary while practicing reading, speaking, and creative thinking.
