Valentine on a Budget

Valentine on a Budget is a light, practical speaking warm-up that combines decision-making with everyday vocabulary. Students imagine they have a small Valentine’s Day budget and must choose gifts or activities carefully. The task encourages simple calculations, preferences, and justification of choices, making it ideal for A1–A2 learners.

How to use

1. Give students one of the 3 warm-up sets.
2. Each set includes 5 Valentine’s items, with prices clearly displayed.
3. Students have a $15 budget and must choose the things they would like to have while staying within the limit.
4. Learners explain their choices and say why they didn’t choose the other options.
5. Compare answers in pairs or as a class and discuss different spending strategies.

This activity works well as a quick Valentine’s warm-up, a pair discussion task, or simple speaking practice focused on preferences and reasons.
